Controversial football character Dave Cook has died from cancer.

Cook was the chairman of Mount Maunganui FC, helping take the club from lowly ranks of local football to almost taking the country’s national championship and Chatham Cup.

In recent years, he was the backer and chairman of NRFL club AFC Fury, and became known for his high profile tangles with football’s rules and hierarchy.

An excellent tribute to Cook, written by Cordwainer Bull, appears at the blog In the Back of the Net.
