All White Winston Reid has given his first interview since joining English Championship club Brentford on loan from West Ham United.
The 32-year-old defender – whose six-year contract with West Ham runs till mid-2023 – says he is looking forward to playing again, having spent the first half of the 2020-21 season on loan to US Major League side Sporting Kansas City.
Reid’s move to Brentford was confirmed as England’s transfer window was about to close.
“I’m looking forward to it, but I’ve been in the position of trying to get promoted before,” said Reid. “It’s a difficult league and there’s a lot of games so I’ll come here, be a part of it, help out where I can and hope to get the club promoted.
Reid has been absent from the Hammers first team since injuring his knee in 2018.
“The injury I had took a lot longer [to heal] than both myself and the club would have wanted. But that’s part of life, it’s just unfortunate really, but now I’m happy to be here.”
Reid now joins the Brentford club where another All White played 92 games in the early 1970s – Brian Turner, part of the coaching/management team for Reid’s New Zealand team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals.
