Former New Zealand Knights manager Paul Nevin has been appointed for a second term as an assistant coach with Gareth Southgate’s senior England team’s coaching staff.
Nevin (52) will work part-time in the role, balancing those responsibilities with his ongoing job as an assistant to West Ham United manager David Moyes.
English-born Nevin spent almost a year managing the ill-fated New Zealand Knights in the A-League in 2006.
He joined West Ham in February 2020 as part of Moyes’ new backroom staff and had previously worked with the England squad during their 2019 UEFA Nations League campaign.
With Moyes’ blessing, Nevin now joins Southgate’s backroom team during international breaks.
Moyes said: “I’m really pleased for Paul and this opportunity will see him continue his development as a coach.”
Nevin was the highest-qualified coach in New Zealand when appointed in the Knights job and had moved to Auckland with his wife and two children.
As a player, he had turned out for clubs including Shrewsbury Town, Carlisle United and Yeovil Town as well as four years in the USA.
He began his coaching career with eight years working with junior and youth players at Fulham before he took on the Knights role.
After losing the Knights job in November 2006, he joined the Aspire Academy working with young players and coaches in the Middle East.
He returned to England in 2013 for coaching roles with Norwich City, Brighton & Hove Albion and with the EPL.
Of the appointment to the England role, Southgate said: “Paul is a hugely respected coach and somebody we know well so we’re thankful to David Moyes and West Ham for allowing him to support us on the road to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Nevin is one of two advisors to Southgate with New Zealand connections.
The other is Southlander Owen Eastwood, a lawyer-turned-performance coach, who worked with the Three Lions ahead of the last FIFA World Cup Finals and to help them prepare for the European Championships this year.
Eastwood has consulted to many leading sports teams including the All Blacks and the British Olympic team.
