Birkenhead United’s home ground is getting a significant upgrade ahead of its use as a base training camp for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Italian team will use Shepherds Park as their team base.

Shepherds Park was revealed this week as one of the team base camps to be used during the World Cup and is an example of the significant upgrades being made as part of the Government’s $19 million programme to prepare for the tournament.

Dr Claudia Wyss, Director of Customer & Community Services at Auckland Council, said during a visit to Shepherds Park:
“Auckland is home to over 220 different ethnic cultures and what just makes this so exciting is hosting the Women’s World Cup for FIFA gives all of those ethnicities a chance to connect with so many different people across different parts of the world as they’re playing in the tournament.
“But it also gives other parts of the world an insight into New Zealand. And (in) New Zealand, we’re really proud of our Manaakitanga. And we really hope that we can show that Manaakitanga, that hosting, that welcoming to our various communities globally so that they can really enjoy being part of our wonderful city.”
