Midfielder Sam Burfoot makes early season switch from Birkenhead to Takapuna

Dual Chatham Cup winner Sam Burfoot has made a surprise move from Birkenhead United to join Northern League rivals Takapuna.

Burfoot (28) started the season as Birkenhead’s captain, substituted during his side’s 4-2 season-opening loss to newly-promoted Manurewa on March 25.

In round two, on April 1, the central midfielder played a full 90 minutes for Takapuna in their 1-0 loss at home to Melville United.

In his senior career, Burfoot has left and returned several times to Birkenhead, the club he captained to Chatham Cup glory in 2018 and was also a member of their 2016 cup-winning side.

Burfoot started as a 9th-grade player with Birkenhead United before making his senior debut at 18.

After a season with Bromley in the United Kingdom, he returned to New Zealand to play for Western Springs.

Between 2013 and 2016, he alternated between Springs and Auckland City, before re-joining Birkenhead in 2016.

Spells followed with Eastern Suburbs, Marconi Stallions (Australia) and, briefly, Auckland City before Burfoot signed again for Birkenhead for the 2018 season, becoming their captain.

He spent two Northern League seasons with Bay Olympic before heading back to Birkenhead for the 2021 season where he remained till March 2023.
