New Zealand and Wellington Phoenix defender Finn Surman is reported to be set for a transfer to Major League Soccer club Portland Timbers.

Surman (20) is set to join the Oregon-based team coached by former England international Phil Neville, according to a report published by the Australian FTBL site.

Surman is under contract to the Phoenix till mid-2025, and FTBL’s report says they understand the Wellington club would pick up “a nominal sum” in a transfer deal.

Portland Timbers are currently sixth in the MLS Western Conference.

Surman becomes the latest Wellington Phoenix to be subject to transfer speculation, following reports in June that New Zealand international midfielder Ben Old is soon to join French club St Etienne.

Old is under contract to the Phoenix till the end of the 2026-27 A-League season.

Surman became a mainstay of the Phoenix defence during the 2023-24 Isuzu UTE A-League season and established himself as a member of the All Whites, earning five caps since his full international debut in mid-2023.

Christchurch-born, Surman played his junior and youth football for Selwyn United before joining the Phoenix academy.

Phoenix players rush to congratulate Finn Surman after his last-gasp winner against Melbourne Victory in April 2024.
