Phoenix defender Sam Sutton to replace injured fullback in All Whites squad

posted in: All Whites, National teams, News

Wellington Phoenix fullback Sam Sutton will join the All Whites in Los Angeles as a replacement for Dalton Wilkins who has suffered an injury ahead of the international friendlies against Mexico and the United States.

Sutton made his senior international bow at the OFC Men’s Nations Cup in June and started three of New Zealand’s four matches in Vanuatu, including the final.

He also started all three of New Zealand’s matches at this year’s Paris Olympics.

He is the third injury replacement for the squad, following call-ups of United States-based defender Bill Tuiloma and Auckland FC striker Logan Rogerson.

Midfielder Sarpreet Singh withdrew from the squad because of a minor injury while defender Tyler Bindon suffered a concussion while playing for Reading against Charlton Athletic last weekend.

New Zealand have selected a squad that is considered one of the strongest ever, including players attached to clubs in the English Premier League, Italy’s Serie A, and France’s LIgue 1.
