PREVIEW: Battle begins for promotion to next year’s Southern League

posted in: News, Southern League

The contest to find the Southern League’s next club begins on Saturday when a series of promotion play-off games get underway.

FC Twenty 11 have been relegated from the Southern League, after finishing bottom of the 2024 competition.

Their replacements will be one of three clubs — Waimak United (winners of the New World Premiership), FC Nelson (runners-up in the Nelson Pine Premership) or Wanaka (Southern Premier League winners).

Waimak United host Nelson in the first play-off at their Kaiapoi grounds on Saturday, with the second leg scheduled for FC Nelson’s Guppy Park a week later.

Both teams meet with strong records, having lost only two league games each this year.

FC Nelson are in the play-offs after finishing runners-up in the Nelson Pine Premiership to Rangers who declined the opportunity to seek promotion.

The winners of the Waimak-Nelson play-off will then face Southern Premier League champions in a two-legged home and away play-off series.
