Aucklanders wanting to assess the strength of Northern League football can check out the competition’s two top teams when they meet at Kiwitea Street.
Here’s our neutral’s guide to top games in the North this weekend (May 28-30).
Friday night football
Start the weekend with the Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier Division match between leaders Western Springs and Ellerslie.
The game’s at Seddon Fields (7.30pm).
Northern League
Saturday
This is the biggest match-up of the season so far – competition leaders Auckland City host second-placed Auckland United at Kiwitea Street (3pm).
The winner tops the table on Saturday night. A draw keeps City in pole position.
Auckland City have the best attack in the competition (33 goals in nine games) while United boasts the meanest defence (conceding eight goals in 10 outings).
Lotto NRFL first division
Saturday
Mount Albert-Ponsonby have racked up 24 goals so far this season, easily outscoring the rest of the division.
They meet high-flying Albany United at Anderson Park (3pm) in what we predict will be a high-scoring affair.
Lotto NRFL second division
Leaders Onehunga Mangere United are riding high in their centenary year – on Saturday they host Northland FC at Mangere Mountain (3pm).
Expect a free-flowing game.
Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier Division
On Sunday, two of the teams chasing leaders Western Springs meet in a game that’s likely to be evenly contested.
Eastern Suburbs host Auckland United at Madills Farm (1pm).
