Friends together – how we’re working with The Centre Circle

Friends of Football are working with Canterbury-based supporter group The Centre Circle, providing football fans in both islands the chance to enjoy events and to help the sport in various ways.

Friends of Football, whose membership is mainly Auckland-based, was founded in 2013 by former All White Brian Turner.

His teammates from New Zealand’s 1982 World Cup campaign, captain Steve Sumner and Bobby Almond, were instrumental in establishing The Centre Circle in 1998, with Sumner as its founding chair.

The Centre Circle went into hiatus in 2004 but was relaunched after Sumner’s death in 2017, responding to Sumner’s wish to see the group continue its good work.

Today, Friends of Football and The Centre Circle pursue similar objectives, including the desire to bring football people together at social events and to find ways to help football through fundraising and providing practical support.

Ways in which the two groups will work together include access to each other’s events, gathering at football events (such as cup finals and internationals) and helping to promote activities.
