New Zealand learn group opponents at FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup

New Zealand will meet Japan, Ghana and Austria in their pool at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.

The tournament takes place from August 31 – September 22, 2024 with 24 nations competing in the three host cities, Bogotá, Cali and Medellín.

The tournament draw was held in Bogotá on Thursday June 6, 2024 (NZT), and the match schedule was confirmed.

New Zealand qualified for the Colombia tournament after winning the 2023 OFC U-19 Women’s Championship. The 2024 tournament will be New Zealand’s ninth and their best previous performance was reaching the quarter-finals in 2014.

Their group opponents:

  • Japan were runners-up at the 2024 AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup, and were the U-20 world champions at the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in France. The Colombia tournament will be Japan’s eighth World Cup.
  • Austria will make their first-ever appearance at a FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. They qualified as the fifth-ranked team at the 2023 UEFA U-19 Women’s Championship.
  • Ghana were one of four nations to qualify through the 2024 African U-20 World Cup qualifiers. They have been to six previous U-20 tournaments, and have yet to reach the knockout stages.

Oceania’s second qualifying team, Fiji, will go into a strong group with France, Canada and Brazil.

Fiji qualified as runners-up to New Zealand at the 2023 OFC U-19 Women’s Championship. The Colombia tournament will be Fiji’s first-ever participation at a FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
