Fixtures pile up as Phoenix mount challenge to reach A-League play-offs

posted in: Events, News

The Wellington Phoenix face a fixture pile-up as they try to mount a run for the top six play-offs in the second half of their men’s A-League season.

After the postponement of their latest game, against champions Melbourne City on Sunday (March 6), the Phoenix will go into the last seven weeks of the regular season with:

  • Up to four games in hand over some of their play-off rivals.
  • Five games still unscheduled, with dates and venues still to be found.
  • No guarantees that nature — their latest game was called off due to a waterlogged Leichhardt Oval — won’t conjure up more hurdles.

The Melbourne City match became a victim of the extreme weather that has left many parts of New South Wales coping with floods.

Weather permitting, the team’s next match is on Wednesday (March 9) against Newcastle Jets at Central Coast Stadium, Gosford.
