Tauranga City join Rangers at the top after beating Albany

Tauranga City have moved level on points with West Coast Rangers at the top of the Lotto NRFL first division.

City are second in the table on goal difference after beating Albany United 2-1 at Rosedale Park on Sunday (April 10, 2022).

Tauranga and West Coast Rangers both have 100% winning records and are setting the pace after three rounds of competition.

The Barry Gardiner-coached Tauranga side took the lead through 17-year-old Minko Brinkmann who has maintained his record of scoring in every game since his senior debut in round one.

He scored in the 29th minute but Albany levelled almost immediately through leading goalscorer and captain Jack Beguely.

The sides turned around at 1-1.

Tauranga scored what turned out to be the winning goal when Braxton Fisher-Vanderveen found the net in the 67th minute.

It was a frustrating day for Albany whose players collected four yellow cards, all for what referee Chris Trent deemed to be reckless fouls.
