Auckland football writer Michael Burgess says the date for New Zealand’s interconfederation FIFA World Cup play-off against Costa Rica has been confirmed.
In his weekly NZ Herald column, Burgess writes:
‘Mark it in your calendar. The date for the All Whites’ biggest match since 2017 has been confirmed, with New Zealand to face Costa Rica on June 14 in Doha (June 15 NZT).”
The play-off date has not yet been made public by FIFA, NZ Football or Costa Rica’s national body, though it has been previously acknowledged as June 14-15 (NZT).
However, if Burgess’ information is on the money, it means New Zealanders will be watching the live broadcast while having breakfast on Wednesday June 15 (NZT).
The match would be played a day after the first of the two intercontinental play-offs in Doha, which will between Peru and either Australia or United Arab Emirates.
Burgess has previously reported that NZ Football are looking to stage a warm-up match against Peru in the first week of June, as the game would provide ideal preparation for both countries.
