This weekend’s Northern League match-up between North Shore United and Takapuna will have more than bragging rights at stake.
The Quinnell/Richards Cup has been brought out of North Shore United’s trophy cabinet for the much-anticipated derby against newly-promoted Takapuna at Allen Hill Stadium on Saturday (3pm).
The cup, in honour of the service to both clubs by Joan and Don Quinnell and legendary broadcaster and administrator Alan Richards, is up for grabs whenever the two clubs meet.
Takapuna AFC evolved out of North Shore United in the 1960s as the Shore rapidly expanded following the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Until Takapuna could afford their own strip, they originally played in a borrowed North Shore kit.
As well as the trophy, both clubs will be anxious to use the win to pull clear of the Northern League relegation zone.
Shore are currently 11th on the 12-team ladder, while Takapuna sit in 10th place.
