A goal from skipper Sione Fa’apoi was enough to give Fencibles United an important win in the Lotto NRFL first division against struggling Metro FC.
Playing under Friday night lights at Phyllis Street, the 1-0 win to Fencibles was enough to lift them from 9th to 5th on the congested league table.
Fa’apoi’s goal came in the 35th minute and Fencibles went into half-time with their 1-0 lead.
In the second half, coach Martin Rodwell used all five of his substitutes to ensure Metro would not find a way back.
Metro’s inability to score creates an early season headache for coaching duo Nathan Christie and Danyon Drake.
The team has scored only twice in six outings — one a penalty, the other an own goal.
Metro supporters will wait in trepidation for Albany United’s result at Ellerslie on Saturday — a draw or better will be enough to consign Metro to bottom place on the table.
