Suburbs climb into top half of WPL table with 3-0 win against Western Springs

Goals by two recent signings have helped champions Eastern Suburbs to a much-needed win in the Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier League.

While other WPL teams were engaged in Kate Sheppard Cup fixtures, Suburbs hosted Western Springs at Madills Farm in the only league fixture of the weekend.

Suburbs, who have struggled with inconsistent form this year, started well when Saki Yoshida scored after only three minutes.

Yoshida (22) signed with Suburbs last month after playing for Yamanashi University in Japan.

The teams went into half-time with the Lilywhites leading 1-0.

Three minutes into the second spell, another new signing, Deven Jackson, doubled Suburbs’ lead.

That put the pressure on second-placed Springs but a third goal, by Suburbs skipper Rebekah Van Dort, finished the game as a contest. Her 57th-minute goal, and yellow cards for two Springs players, gave the home side the upper hand.

For Suburbs, the win lifts the club into the top half of the table for the first time this season while for Springs, the game was a lost chance to draw level on points with unbeaten leaders Northern Rovers.
