Friday night lights favour Metro as they climb from bottom of first division table

posted in: News

Metro jumped clear from the bottom of the Lotto NRFL first division table with a comfortable 3-0 win against Waitemata in which all the goals came in the second half.

Such is the congestion in the competition, the three points took Metro five places up the ladder, though positions will surely change when Saturday games are completed.

Clearly, Friday night football under lights agrees with Metro.

The latest win at Phyllis St was Metro’s third of the season — and all have been Friday night matches.

Metro have struggled to score this season and had found the net only four times in eight outings, going into the game against Waitemata. Of those four goals, one was a penalty, another was an own goal.

So it was hardly surprising the teams were scoreless at half time.

In the second half, Jaydyn Englefield broke through in the 52nd minute, scoring his fourth goal of the season.

In the 59th minute, the home side went 2-0 up, thanks to an own goal credited to Waitemata’s Jordan O’Neill.

And with quarter of an hour left, Honggyu Han made sure of Metro’s best result of the season when he added a third.

No doubt the Metro coaches will also be pleased with the clean sheet — a sign that things are turning around?
