All Star midfielder Piscopo leaves Wellington Phoenix for rival A-League club

posted in: News

Midfielder Reno Piscopo has left the Wellington Phoenix to sign with a rival club on the eve of his appearance for the A-League All Stars against FC Barcelona.

The Phoenix have issued a statement saying the 23-year-old attacking midfielder was out of contract and he had signed to play for another Isuzu UTE A-League club for the 2022/23 season, after three years with the Phoenix.

So far, there are few clues as to which club Piscopo has joined though he has been linked with the Newcastle Jets.

Piscopo played 59 A-League matches for the Nix, scoring eight goals and creating eight others.

This season was his most productive league campaign, finding the back of the net four times in 22 games and producing three assists. His first three goals came in an eye-catching four-game span in February.

On Wednesday, he will be in the A-League All Stars squad to face giants FC Barcelona in Sydney.

Talay: ‘He’s a good kid … I think he’ll have success wherever he goes’

“I wish him all the best and I thoroughly enjoyed working with him,” Phoenix head coach Ufuk Talay said.

“Reno’s a talented player, which I still believe hasn’t really reached his full potential. I think injuries hindered that potential and talent to come out the last two seasons.

“He’s a good kid, he’s got a great character and I think he’ll have success wherever he goes because I think he has the right tools to do that.

“I think he’s going to be a very good player. I think he’s a really talented player with a lot of attributes that will push him to have a really good career.”
