New Zealand’s Football Ferns will play former world champions Japan in an international friendly on October 9, 2022.

The match will be played at Nagano U Stadium, Nagano, providing New Zealand with another key step in their preparations for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be held in New Zealand and Australia.

Announcing the fixture on the NZ Football website, NZF’s General Manager of High Performance Gareth Jennings said:

“With the draw for the World Cup confirmed for October, we’re focused on preparing the team for a range of potential opposition, and we know Japan will offer a great challenge for the Ferns in that they’re a very organised, technical team.”

The Ferns last played Japan in June 2018, losing 3-1 at Wellington’s Sky Stadium.

Japan are currently rated 13th in FIFA’s world rankings and are one of 10 teams to have already qualified for the World Cup.
