New Zealand age-group international Dane Schnell heads a trio of new signings for Northern League club Birkenhead United.

Schnell (23) moved across Auckland’s harbour to complete his move from Western Springs ahead of the June 30 transfer deadline.

The midfielder represented New Zealand at the U-17 FIFA World Cup in 2015 and at the U-20 FIFA World Cup in 2019, as well as being a member of New Zealand’s Olympic squad.

He’s had a relatively quiet season so far, scoring only once for Springs.

Birkenhead’s other signings were forward Vincent Phirun (19), signed from Eastern Suburbs, and defender Codey Phoenix (17) who has been at East Coast Bays throughout his youth career, except for the 2020 season when he turned out for Hibiscus Coast.

Phirun joined Suburbs from Tauranga City at the end of the 2021 season.
