Past and present members of Papatoetoe FC have paid tributes to club stalwart Tom Manderson who has died in Waikato Hospital, aged 90.
Manderson and his late wife Ellen were key figures at the South Auckland club in the 1970s and 1980s.
In a social media posting, the club acknowledged the contribution by the Mandersons:
“The Manderson family were well-respected and popular club members during the 1970s and 1980s.
“Tom and his wife Ellen were parent figures to many of the younger generation due to their lovely friendly nature and hard-working demeanours.
“Tom, you will be greatly missed (as is Ellen) and thank you for your many years of friendship. Love and condolences to the Manderson family. Kia Kaha.”
Son Kerry made the following tribute to his parents:
“Wonderful father and married for 67 years until Mum passed last year.
“What a full life you made. Auckland and club champs as a sprinter; Ellerslie, Auckland and North island rep in rugby league, A-grade mechanic, successful farmer. Loving husband and father of five and grandfather and great grandfather.
“Worked as masseur to Papatoetoe FC during the glory years in the national league.
“Well-earned respect and love by many.
You taught us all so much and now is your time to rest.
Go well dad, it’s time to rest, be with Mum.”
