Birkenhead United youngster signs deal with fifth-tier French club

Another young Birkenhead United player is heading to Europe in search of a professional football career.

Jordan Toy (18) has signed a one-year contract to join fifth-tier French club St Pierre de Milizac who are based in the Brest region.

Little more than a year after Birkenhead’s Alex Greive set off to Scotland — and a rapid path into the All Whites after showing form with St Mirren — Toy hopes the move will kick-start a pro career.

Toy told Match of the Bay writer Mathew Nash: “My aim is to just improve as much as I can and impress the club and put myself in a good position to extend my contract and continue to build my way up the leagues in Europe. Then, hopefully, I can reach the world stage.”

Toy joined Birkenhead for the 2022 Northern League season, scoring three times before signing for the French club in mid-July.

He had previously played for Tauranga City and had captained Tauranga Boys College’s first XI.

Birkenhead helped connect Toy with a UK-based agent who landed the deal with St Pierre de Milizac who play in the National 3 — Bretagne league.
