Fiji team plans games against Northern League clubs ahead of OFC tournament

Fijian club Rewa FC say they’ll play warm-up games against Birkenhead United and Auckland United as they prepare for the start of August’s OFC Champions League.

The squad, runners-up in Fiji’s Premier League last year, say they’ve organised friendlies against Auckland United and Birkenhead on Wednesday July 27 and on Saturday July 30.

Bev’s Broadcasting’s Bevan Jenkinson says his service will stream the Wednesday game from North Harbour Stadium, starting at 7pm, understood to be between Rewa and Auckland United.

Neither of the two Northern League clubs have domestic matches scheduled this week due to their elimination from the Chatham Cup.

Rewa president Nazeel Buksh told Fiji Live the warm-up games would give the team “some serious testing grounds”.

“We have a few matches in artificial turf and our training will be arranged accordingly. This is to get the team to acclimatize to the weather and the turf itself,” he told FBC News.

Rewa face Cook Islands champions Nikao Sokattack in their opening group game, at Auckland’s Ngahue Reserve on Friday August 5 (3pm).

Rewa play Auckland City in their second pool match on Monday August 8 (noon).
