Can treble-chasing Auckland City go unbeaten in all three competitions?

posted in: News

With six weeks of their season left, Auckland City are chasing a spectacular treble — as well as the prospect of completing their season unbeaten.

If the Navy Blues keep winning, they face 10 games in six weeks as they seek to add the OFC Champions League title and the Chatham Cup to the Northern League title they have already secured.

And chances are that City will have to play all 10 games away from home or at neutral venues.

With 20 rounds of their Northern League campaign completed, City’s next challenge is a trip to Otago for Saturday’s Chatham Cup quarter-final against Dunedin City Royals.

Victory in Dunedin would ensure a semi-final to be played in late August.

Meanwhile, in August, the Navy Blues will contest the OFC Champions League tournament in Auckland.

They face three group games and then, if they secure first or second placings in their pool, they will play a semi-final and potential final at Ngahue Reserve, the home of OFC football.

After the OFC Champions League is completed, City will play their two remaining Northern League fixtures, both away games, against Western Springs and Auckland United.

If they remain unbeaten in those games, City will have gone through an undefeated league campaign for the fourth time in the club’s history (they previous achieved this in 2011-12, 2015-16 and 2018-19).
