Football Ferns defender Katie Bowen has been given an early release from her contract with the North Carolina Courage so she can sign for Melbourne City.

The Courage announced her release, saying the contract was mutually terminated so Bowen could join Melbourne City in time for the women’s A-League season.

Bowen spent one season with the Courage, helping win the 2022 Challenge Cup championship.

The former North Carolina Tar Heel player leaves the United States after six NWSL seasons, playing her first two seasons (2016, 2017) in Kansas City.

She then joined the now-disbanded Utah club for 2018 and 2019 before returning to Kansas City in 2021.

Bowen has represented New Zealand at three World Cups and two Olympic Games.
