Wellington Phoenix coach Ufuk Talay has confirmed he has formally applied for the vacant role of head coach for the All Whites.

At his weekly media conference, Talay said he was serious about the role and he had applied before last week’s deadline for applications.

“What’s come out of my mouth has been quite serious,” Talay said.

“I think it works better if we align NZ Football with Wellington Phoenix.

“If we have the FIFA international breaks like we do this season, why wouldn’t it work?”

NZ Football aim to make the appointment before Christmas but first have to appoint a new head of high performance to replace Gareth Jennings who resigned in mid-year.

All Whites coach Danny Hay left his role on October 31 after opting not to re-apply for the position.
