Eastern Suburbs face tough challenge as they seek all-important point for finals spot

posted in: News

With three games to go, Eastern Suburbs still need another competition point to confirm a place in this year’s Grand Final of the Women’s National League.

But that point might not come easily this weekend when the Lilywhites host local rivals Northern Rivals who badly need a win to reach the Grand Final too.

Suburbs ended their 10-game winning streak last weekend, losing 2-1 to Canterbury United Pride last weekend.

The game was played at William Green Domain, rather than at Suburbs’ family home turf of Madills Farm.

This weekend, Suburbs will play their ‘home’ game at Riverhills Park, and the lack of familiar surrounds might introduce a few jitters as they look to clinch their finals berth.

The Grand Final is already certain to be an all-Auckland affair, with Western Springs the third club still in contention.

They appear to have overcome their mid-season form blip, even if they had to fight back from two goals down to beat Auckland United 3-2 last weekend.

They have a tricky trip to Wellington on Saturday to play the improving Capital Football side, who drew 1-1 with Southern United last weekend.

Here’s how the weekend schedule looks:
