Northern Rovers win national U-17 women’s title after tense penalty shootout

Northern Rovers are the national U-17 women’s champions after beating Auckland United in the tournament final at Auckland’s Seddon Fields.

Rovers won the Championship final 6-5 in a penalty shootout after the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of normal time.

Rovers had taken the lead through a superb free kick in the first half from Alexis Cook, who maintained her record of scoring in every fixture she played during the four-day tournament.

Late in the second half, Auckland United levelled when age group international Ruby Nathan scored from the penalty spot.

The penalty shootout was tense as players from both sides stepped forward, striking the ball with confidence.

But Rovers got the edge and will take the title home with them.

Earlier in the day, Ellerslie won the Bowl final and West Coast Rangers won the Plate final.
