Auckland City make second signing ahead of departure to FIFA Club World Cup

Auckland City have signed defender Regont Murati from local rivals Auckland United in time for him to travel to the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco.

Murati is City’s second signing during the January transfer window, following the arrival of All Whites defender Nikko Boxall from USL Championship side San Diego Loyals.

Murati (26) joined Auckland United in 2021 after spells with Waitakere United, Eastern Suburbs, two stints at Central United, and Hamilton Wanderers.

Murati told Auckland City’s website:

“I’m grateful to be back and feel very blessed to sign for Auckland City FC and hopefully, I can help the team achieve its goals this year. I’m excited for the FIFA Club World Cup campaign in Morocco, it’s a wonderful opportunity for team and for me on a personal level.

“Morocco is a great football country and their fans are passionate and their national team had a very good World Cup.”

City head coach Albert Riera said:

“We need good people at this club. They need to have ability, a fantastic work ethic, they need to be humble and their attitude needs to be second to none. Reggy and I both played for Central United FC at the same time so I know he fits all those criteria.

“I saw his progression with Auckland United and we had to suffer his abilities as their rivals so I believe his evolution has been one of the most impressive in the National League Championship last season -— I’m sure he’s going to help us a lot in 2023.”
