Striker Alex Morgan was withdrawn from the United States starting line-up only half an hour before kick-off against the Football Ferns at Auckland’s Eden Park.
After being named as captain for her 202nd international appearance, Morgan reported a tightening in her lower leg and was replaced in the side by Ashley Hatch.
Rose Lavelle was named as the replacement captain.
Morgan was not named in the subs, indicating the US camp were not willing to risk one of their star players.
At the end of the match, television viewers saw New Zealand’s Ashleigh Ward approach Morgan to which Morgan clearly answered: “Calf.”
