Update: Striker Ben Waine omitted from squad as Argyle lose at Wembley

All Whites striker Ben Waine missed his chance to play at England’s Wembley Stadium as he was left out of Plymouth Argyle’s squad to face Bolton Wanderers in the final of the EFL Trophy.

Wanderers beat Argyle 4-0 in a one-side final played before more than 79,000 spectators.

Argyle manager Steven Schumacher apologised to his team’s supporters:

“Obviously devastated with the outcome. I think congratulations is due to Bolton Wanderers, they were the better team and deserved to win the game.

“I also want to apologise to our fans; we didn’t want it to go like that.”

Argyle will now concentrate on their bid to earn automatic promotion to the English Championship.

The side is currently second on the League One table, on goal difference to Sheffield Wednesday, and have eight games remaining, two of which are over Easter.

Waine’s first goal for Argyle after his transfer from the Wellington Phoenix was against Bristol Rovers in the quarter final of the EFL Trophy.
