Waitemata FC have set up a special fund to help financially-stressed members continue to play football while facing cost of living increases.

The club has established its Sporting Chance Support Fund and is appealing to existing members, and the local business community, to help the initiative through making donations.

The fund has already had support from some of its senior teams, committee members and local firms.

“These valuable funds will help provide fee support, equipment provision and ongoing costs to play throughout the 2023 season,” the club says.

The Sporting Chance Support Fund would contribute towards specific essential items such as:

  • Nike playing apparel such as playing strips or football boots etc.
  • Junior / youth season fees.

“The club’s aim is to sponsor as many young players through this fund, with the potential to sponsor more of our ever-increasing membership base should the generosity of our local community allow us to do so,” the club says on its website.

Club president Conan McKinstry says the club aims to continue to explore ways to keep down the costs of joining.

“Whilst the cost of operating the club continues to go up, we continue to recognise the financial strain on young families and the committee is exploring every avenue to make this a truly affordable and accessible sport for all through the variety of new initiatives we are running this season,” he said.

Waitemata is among a number of Auckland clubs to reduce their registration fees for young players this year, recognising the pressure on families in the current economic environment.
