VIDEO: Why Capital Football won’t pay their bills for using council pitches

Capital Football are holding back payments to Wellington City Council until they get transparency on why the costs of hiring turf pitches is so expensive.

The federation’s chief executive, Richard Reid, says football pays about $300,000 a year to hire the council-owned sports grounds but he wants answers as to why the hireage is expensive compared to elsewhere.

In Wellington, football pays $82.50 an hour to hire a turf pitch for senior use, and $40 an hour for college and junior use.

This compares to no charge for using council-owned turf pitches in Auckland and $45 an hour in Christchurch.

“I want transparency. I want to see the cost models,” Reid told 1News.

The council has promised a review.
