Christchurch United needed extra time to beat Ferrymead Bays 1-0 in their third round Chatham Cup tie under Friday night floodlights.
Captain Matt Todd-Smith got the winner in the 96th minute in a match that saw nine yellow cards and three red cards brandished by referee Caleb Downes.
Ferrymead’s Jamie Barr and Joaquin Julve were sent off in extra time for double yellows, while United substitute Louis King got a straight red two minutes from the end of the tie.
Meanwhile, Fencibles United joined Dunedin City Royals in the quarter-finals of the Kate Sheppard Cup with a 3-2 win against Otumoetai.
