Oratia United’s latest win keeps memories alive of much-loved player

Oratia United’s 2-1 win against local rivals Waitemata had more at stake than three points in the Lotto NRFL Northern Conference.

The game was played for the Mark Wellesley-Davies Trophy, which is contested between the clubs to keep alive the memory of Mark Wellesley-Davies, a player who turned out for both clubs.

Wellesley-Davies died in a motor accident in 2005 but both clubs continue to remember him through football.

In the latest trophy game, Oratia’s Max Whitehead scored a double to give his side a 2-1 away win, and gain three points which lifted Tia into third place in the competition.
