Former Prime Minister Dame Jacinda Ardern has urged her 1.7 million Instagram followers to “jump online and join in” for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Her post directed followers to FIFA’s online ticket sales links for New Zealand and Australia.
“My feed is going to be dominated by a lot of football chat these next few weeks — not because I’m an expert, but because I’m so excited that New Zealand is hosting such a massive event full of amazing teams and athletes from around the world,” she said.
“There are still tickets to some games across New Zealand (Auckland, Dunedin, Wellington and Hamilton) so whether you are an amateur enthusiast or an expert, this is your reminder to jump online and join in.”
Ardern’s call to action came as tournament organisers confirmed 1,250,000 tickets have been sold for the tournament, with 320,000 of them sold for the 29 games to be played in New Zealand.
