Birkenhead United’s Dylan Hobson heads to United States for scholarship

After 17 consecutive seasons with Birkenhead United, set piece specialist Dylan Hobson will play his last home game for the club in Sunday’s Northern League game against Western Springs.

Defender Hobson (21) — he played his first game for the club when he was four — is heading to the United States to take up a scholarship at Colorado Mesa University.

Hobson, who specialises in scoring stunning goals from free kicks, was a member of Birkenhead’s 2018 Chatham Cup-winning team, and was a member of the club’s sides to win U-19 national tournaments in 2019 and 2021, as well as a national U-17s title in 2017.

A second Birkenhead United player will also make his last home appearance in the match against Springs — forward Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit.

A member of Birkenhead’s 2020 U-19’s national tournament winners, Carlson Du-Toit (20) will return to Regis University in Denver, Colorado, to continue his tertiary education.

Birkenhead United’s head coach Paul Hobson said in the club’s match programme:

“We’ve been really impressed with Ray; he’s led the line so well for us, scoring five goals this season so far, and offering a huge threat with his fitness and work rate, which has been a huge contribution.”

Du Carlson-Toit has had previous stints with Eastern Suburbs, Northern Rovers and North Shore United.
