All Whites striker Max Mata’s debut for his new English club is being held up due to delays in getting his work visa.

Mata (23) has signed with League One club Shrewsbury Town but has been unable to take the field while he awaits approval of his visa, after moving from League of Ireland club Sligo Rovers.

Shrewsbury Town manager Matt Taylor hopes his new forward will be clear to play on Tuesday when they host Burton Albion.

He told the club’s website:

“We don’t know — it’s with the Home Office. All we do know is we have two players up front — we need reinforcements in those areas — we are acutely aware of that.

“What we are hoping is that Max is available as soon as possible. He is ready to play. He is chomping at the bit to be involved.

“As and when that is I don’t know. We just hope it will be sooner rather than later.”

Mata has already missed a Football League Cup tie against Leeds United, lost 2-1, and Saturday’s 2-0 league defeat at Stevenage.

If Mata plays against Burton Albion on Tuesday, he’ll be re-united with All Whites teammate Max Crocombe.

The New Zealand ‘keeper joined Burton Albion from Grimsby Town during the English summer.
