Manurewa become latest club to earn Men’s National League qualification

Only two spots remain in this year’s Men’s National League after Manurewa became the latest club to qualify for the 10-team competition.

Manurewa ensured they would fill the fourth qualifying spot from the Northern League with a 1-0 win against Manukau United last weekend.

The result confirmed a return to National League status, forty years after being crowned national champions.

The club’s Football Lead, Farhad Bhamji, told social media followers it was a win for South Auckland.

“Manurewa AFC will be representing South Auckland in the National League.

“We have bigger dreams, and this is just the beginning.”

Three newcomers to competition

This year’s Men’s National League will see three or four new squads seeking the national crown and the chance to represent New Zealand in the OFC Champions League.

Eastern Suburbs, Manurewa and Petone and/or Western Suburbs will replace three clubs that failed to qualify this year.

Dropping out of the national competition are Birkenhead United, Melville United and Miramar Rangers.

In the Central League, Napier City Rovers, Petone and Western Suburbs are vying for the last two qualifying spots this year.

Christchurch United and Technical will again represent the Southern League.

The Men’s National League season is expected to start in late September.

In mid-season, Friends of Football’s writers provided their tips on the clubs they believed would qualify.
