Former Waitakere United and Team Wellington midfielder Ollie Bassett is one of the leading contenders for Canada’s top player-of-the-year awards.

Bassett (25), who plays for Canada Premier League side Atlético Ottawa, is a shortlisted nominee for the Players’ Player of the Year award, and is one of the favourites to win the prestigious Player of the Year trophy.

The English-born player won both those awards in 2022.

Bassett spent two seasons in New Zealand between 2018 and 2022.

Of his nomination for the 2023 Players’ Player of the Year award, Bassett said: “It means a lot to be recognized by your fellow professionals for your performances over the course of the season, so, of course, I’m happy to get the recognition again this year.”

The Players’ Player of the Year award allows every player in the CPL to vote for their top three players in order, though they are not allowed to vote for their teammates.
