Olympic’s Joel Stevens wins Steve Sumner Trophy for Grand Final performance

Three-cap All White Joel Stevens has won the prized Steve Sumner Trophy for his Player of the Match performance in the Grand Final of the Men’s National League.

Stevens (28) provided the assist for teammate Kailan Gould’s goal in the side’s 2-0 win against Auckland City.

At the presentation at Auckland’s Go Media Stadium Mt Smart, Stevens was presented with the the trophy by Beckett Sumner (9), grandson of the late Sumner, attending the game with his father, Carl Sumner.

Presented since 2018, the trophy ensures the football community continues to honour the memory of Sumner, who led New Zealand to the FIFA World Cup in 1982, won the national league five times (and a record six Chatham Cups).
