Phoenix defender becomes third replacement for Ferns squad to play Colombia

Wellington Phoenix defender Marisa van der Meer has been called into the Football Ferns squad for their upcoming internationals against Colombia in Bogotá.

The centre back has taken the place of clubmate Macey Fraser (21), who has been forced to withdraw from the trip due to illness.

Van der Meer (21), who has represented New Zealand at U-17 and U-20 level, was part of the Ferns squad at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, but has yet to make her senior bow.

She has been ever-present in the Phoenix back four since joining the club ahead of the 2022-23 Liberty A-League, and has started all six matches this season as the Nix have made their best-ever start to a campaign.

Van der Meer was to travel to Bogotá on Sunday evening with fellow Wellington players Michaela Foster, Kate Taylor, Mackenzie Barry, Brianna Edwards and Manaia Elliott.

She is the third replacement for the squad since it was first announced.

Midfielder Aniela Jensen (21), from the University of the Pacific in the United States, replaced forward Hannah Blake (23) who withdrew because of injury.

Phoenix winger Manaia Elliott (18) replaced Glasgow City defender Meikayla Moore (27).
