Waikato’s Tayla Christensen re-signs after ‘incredible’ first season in Melbourne

Former New Zealand U-20 international Tayla Christensen has re-signed with Victorian women’s champions South Melbourne after a successful first season at the club.

Christensen (26) scored 11 league goals in 2023, and was Player of the Match when South Melbourne beat Bulleen 4-2 in the Grand Final of the Victoria National Premier League Women’s championship.

South Melbourne announced Christensen had re-signed for 2024 “after an incredible first season.”

Christensen, who can play as a forward or in an attacking midfield role, played her junior and youth football at Waikato clubs Cambridge, Claudelands Rovers and Melville United, and then Forrest Hill Milford United in Auckland.

After senior spells with Claudelands Rovers and Hamilton Wanderers, she headed overseas, playing for TCU University in the United States.

She played for Spanish clubs FC Malaga City and Viajes InterRías before joining South Melbourne.

Christensen has represented New Zealand at age group levels, and played at the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

South Melbourne have been confirmed as one of the foundation clubs for the newly-announced National Second Tier competition that starts in 2025.
