An Auckland U-12 futsal team is about to compete against international sides at the annual World Futsal Cup in Spain.

The Auckland Wolves — most of whom have played football together since they were five-years-old — qualified for the tournament by beating an Australian team.

Since qualifying, they’ve had extra support through national futsal head coach Marvin Eakins who has gone to Spain with the Wolves.

Eakins told 1News: “They’re really talented. There’s some real, raw talent there. They’ve been playing futsal for quite a while and my role is to try and get them prepared for what’s different, which is a tournament environment.”

Eakins says the tournament is also a chance for him to see what styles of play are happening in different countries, and to build his network of contacts.

The World Futsal Cup is run by United Futsal, which began as USA Futsal in 2012, organising tournaments between teams from around the world. This year’s tournament runs from December 26-31.
