Former Wellington Phoenix midfielder sees red in debut for English club

Former Wellington Phoenix midfielder Alex Rodriguez has been sent off in his debut for his new club, English League Two’s Forest Green Rovers.

Rodriguez (30) was sent off just after half-time in Rovers’ 2-0 home loss to Harrogate Town after receiving his second yellow card.

The dismissal came only two days after he signed with the club, following his departure from EFL League One side Oxford United after his three-year contract ended.

Oxford United’s recently-appointed head coach is Des Buckingham, who was an assistant coach at the Phoenix from 2015-2017, when Spaniard Rodriguez made 73 appearances for the A-League club.

Forest Green Rovers have two New Zealanders on the payroll — All Whites goalkeeper Jamie Searle and the club’s chief executive, Aucklander Marcus Reynolds.
