All Whites midfielder Ryan Thomas faces surgery after season-ending injury

All Whites midfielder Ryan Thomas faces another serious setback to his career, suffering a season-ending injury.

His Dutch club PEC Zwolle have announced: “Bad news. Ryan Thomas has suffered a knee injury and will not play again this season.”

Thomas (29) will undergo knee surgery, the club says.

Te Puke-born Thomas has already missed two seasons of football due to injury, surgery, and rehabilitation, stymieing his professional career and ruling him out of New Zealand national team consideration.

He joined Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in 2018 but the former Melville United, Waikato FC and Western Suburbs player experienced a cruciate ligament tear, and needed two operations on his knee and ankle.

He returned to his former club PEC Zwolle on a one-year contract in October 2022 and has played seven games in the Eredivisie before the midseason winter break. His last game was in December 2023.

Thomas made his All Whites debut in 2014 but has been restricted to 19 full internationals.
