Women’s A-League leaders Melbourne City dominated possession to overcome Wellington Phoenix 2-1 despite a second-half red card that forced the home side to finish with 10 players.
Rhianna Pollicina put Melbourne ahead early in the second half.
Melbourne’s Emina Ekic scored the crucial second goal for her side but the Phoenix quickly responded when Mariana Speckmaier smashed home a well-taken goal.
Ekic was sent off for a second yellow card, giving the Phoenix a chance to grab a draw.
But the Phoenix could not break down a resilient Melbourne defence, and they suffered their fourth loss in a row, dropping into the bottom half of a congested Liberty A-League table.
