West Coast Rangers sign midfielder Sam Burfoot from relegated Takapuna

Dual Chatham Cup winner Sam Burfoot has joined Northern League club West Coast Rangers.

Burfoot (29) has signed for Rangers after a season with league rivals Takapuna, who have been relegated to the 2024 Lotto NRFL Men’s Championship.

Announcing his signing, Rangers said: “He brings to West Coast a huge amount of experience, passion and knowledge and will be an undeniable asset for the season.”

Midfielder Burfoot was previously a long-time Birkenhead United player, joining as a 9th grade player and making his senior debut at 18.

He captained Birkenhead to Chatham Cup victory in 2018 and was a member of their 2016 cup-winning squad.

Burfoot’s other clubs include Bromley (United Kingdom), Marconi Stallions (Australia) and New Zealand clubs Eastern Suburbs and Auckland City.

Rangers will again be coached by former All Whites defender Chad Coombes (40) who will be joined in the dugout by new assistant coach Andrew Clay (55) who joins from Northern Rovers.

Meanwhile, Rangers have also confirmed the re-signing of players from their 2023 season including:

  • Captain and midfielder Dev Pokhrel (27).
  • Co-vice captains Josh Jones (24) and goalkeeper Damian Hirst (28).
  • Josh Armitt (27) who is nearing his 200th appearance for Rangers.
  • Midfielder Felix Van Hattum (19), formerly with the Wellington Phoenix academy and Lower Hutt City.
  • Ben Gallagher (22), a graduate from Rangers’ age group sides.
  • Long-serving defender Dan McDowall (27).
