All Whites defender Tommy Smith signs for A-League club Macarthur

All Whites defender Tommy Smith has signed with men’s A-League club Macarthur until the end of the season.

How the Bulls introduced Tommy Smith to their fans through social media.

Smith (33) joins the Bulls after leaving English League Two club MK Dons.

In a statement announcing his signing, Macarthur said: “We are excited to welcome Tommy Smith to Macarthur FC. We look forward to witnessing him don the Bulls’ colours and showcasing the invaluable experience he brings to the club.”

The Isuzu UTE A-League club says Smith’s arrival will help “to fortify the Bulls’ defensive strategies”.

Smith, who has earned 50 caps for the All Whites, will join international teammate Clayton Lewis at the Bulls.

The MK Dons confirmed the club and Smith had mutually agreed to cancel his contract, enabling him to leave.

“MK Dons would like to thank Tommy for all his efforts whilst at Stadium MK this season and wish him all the very best in his future endeavours,” the club stated on its website.

Meanwhile, a report in UK-based The Courier says Scottish Championship club Dunfermline Athletic had talks with Smith during the January transfer window but the parties failed to reach a deal.

Macclesfield-born Smith has made more than 460 professional club appearances with spells at Ipswich Town, Brentford, Colorado Rapids and Colchester United, where he was club captain.

He played 101 games for Colchester, and the club helped him mark his 500th club and international appearance milestone in 2023.

The tally does not include Smith’s games as a youth player with Auckland’s North Shore United, or youth games with Crewe Alexandra and Ipswich Town.
